Max Burdett (Pierce Brosnan) and his girl Lola Cirillo (Salma Hayek) are diamond thieves. Stan Lloyd (Woody Harrelson) is the FBI agent who’s trying to nail Max. The only problem is that Max always manages to have an alibi.
After stealing the second of three Napoleon diamonds right out of Lloyd’s hands and embarrassing him in the process, Max and Lola decide to retire to an island in the South Pacific.
But is it really retirement when the third Napoleon Diamond shows up on a ship in port right at their very island? Suspicious that their retirement plans were a setup to case the last diamond, Stan shows up to let them know he’s watching them.
Torn between his promise of retirement to Lola and the temptation of the challenge of stealing the third Napoleon diamond, Max is asked by a local gangster (Don Cheadle) to steal the diamond for him.
It’s a fun ride filled with laughs, innuendos and twists as Max and Stan try to stay one step ahead of each other, while trying to keep Lola convinced that he is retired.
While this film is certainly not moral as it advocates diamond theft without consequences and promiscuous sex, it is nevertheless a fun comedy-action film that you cannot take too seriously. A couple of especially funny scenes to watch for include one involving a shark and another that gives new meaning to the phrase, “sleeping with the enemy.”

Brosnan (last four James Bond films) who sports both a beard and a bit of grey for this role is in his element in this heroic portrayal of a diamond thief, carrying much the same confidence he totes in his 007 role; not to mention being surrounded by beautiful women courtesy of Cheadle’s gangster character, while setting his main sights on the women he works with and misusing her trust. Oh yeah, he also sports a high-tech cell phone that can remotely drive any vehicle, simply by accessing its VIN#. So how is this different from his Bond character? Well, it would seem profession is the primary divider. And Max might be a little closer to his heroin than Bond can ever be. Apart from that there isn’t much difference. Did I mention he’s Irish?
Hayek (Wild Wild West) brought the perfect mix of charm, wit, sensuality and feigned obviousness to her character as a woman, who really wanted to retire with her man on the beach watching sunsets.
Harrelson (Cheers, EdTV) is perfectly awkward yet cunning as the washed-up FBI agent still trying to get proof on Max. This leads to some fairly comical scenes for his character.
Naomie Harris (28 Days Later) plays the local police detective who Max both works with to try to capture Burdett and falls for romantically.
Don Cheadle (Picket Fences, Mission to Mars) gets a little lost in the action of the movie as the island’s resident gangster and seemed to be only added to the film so there would be someone was a bigger sinner than our diamond thief hero.
Brett Ratner (Rush Hour movies) has done a fair job at weaving his audience into this story and making us cheer for a thief. Of course, his shots of the island with its crystal clear water and clean beaches don’t hurt in making the film look more attractive. He has also done a good job at interlacing the right amount of comedy with the action, to keep this film going during the slow moments; and the jokes all seem to hit.
